#83 – The Idolatry of God by Peter Rollins (My 100 Favorite Books)

Is it possible to make God into an idol?  Yes.  Do you view God as some really powerful being who hates who you hate, who favors your nation, who basically echoes your politics?  Then your God is probably an idol.  Of course, we’re all tempted to take what we already think about politics, issues and ideas and fit God into that.  This is what Rollins book is all about.  Rollins diagnoses the problem in one instance by pointing out that if you baptize your selfishness, so God is now on your side and gives you all you want and helps your team (country, religion, etc.) win…then you are still selfish.  I love Rollins work since it confronts my views of God and challenges me to think more deeply, to see how I’ve made God into a personal idol.  I recommend anything by Rollins, but this is my favorite.
