#66 – Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke (My 100 Favorite Books)

strange

Imagine a world where magicians exist but only to discuss the theory of magic, for magic has disappeared from the world.  That is, until two magicians appear who begin actually performing magic!  This is the premise for Susanna Clarke’s delightful book set in England during the time of Napoleon.  When magic reappears the government quickly wants to utilize it in the fight against the French.  But Norrell and Strange disagree on how and when to employ their gifts.  Further, dark and powerful forces lurk in the background, being freed by the new magicians.

Its a fun book.  Check it out.
