#61 – Game of Thrones by George RR Martin (My 100 Favorite Books)

This is the cover of the version of Game of Thrones that I own.  With the tremendous popularity of the television show, I enjoy smugly telling people I liked Game of Thrones before it was cool.  Honestly, when I first read this series I was the sort of person who would do so in secret since reading 1000 page fantasy novels did not make you popular!  I remember visiting the Penn State Bookstore in the fall of 2000 to pick up the newly released Storm of Swords.

Game of Thrones blew me away when I first read it because it took familiar fantasy and storytelling tropes and turned them on their heads.  So it was not just an engaging story but also surprising.  The only reason it is not higher on my list is that books four and five were not very good and it seems increasingly unlikely the series will ever finish.  Perhaps this is not fair in judging the first book.  Yet, I can’t imagine recommending this book to my kids or other people in the future if the series is not finished.

At least we’ll have the television show…
