#41 – Animal Farm by George Orwell (My 100 Favorite Books)

“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

Coming at the end of his story of animals overthrowing their human masters to set up a utopian community where all are equal, this sentence is chilling.  Orwell’s other classic book, 1984, also ends on a chilling note (He loved Big Brother!).  For my money, Animal Farm is the better of the two stories.  On one level, it is a simple story of animals rising up and then fighting among themselves as their utopia falls into chaos.  On another level, it is a retelling of the Communist Revolution in Russia, which promised equality and became one of the worst totalitarian governments in world history, killing millions.

So if you slept through Animal Farm in 9th grade English, perhaps it is worth giving it a try again.
